Drama recommendations for this week in town

Frank DiLella, host of “On Stage” on our sister network NY1, shares this week’s list of recommended shows and plays.

After its successful run at the New York City Center Encores, “ONCE UPON A MATTRESS” moved directly to the Hudson Theater on Broadway.

The classic musical comedy based on the story of “The Princess and the Pea” stars two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster alongside Michael Urie and former Saturday Night Live cast member Ana Gasteyer.

Still in pre-release, “Once Upon a Mattress” will premiere on August 12.

On Off-Broadway, and also in preview, we have the play “THE MEETING: THE INTERPRETER”, starring Kelley Curran from the series “The Gilded Age” and Tony winner Frank Wood.

In this politically charged play, Curran and Wood focus on the 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between Paul Manafort and Donald Trump, Jr., and explore the story of a man involved in government systems .

It will make its official debut Sunday at the Theater at St. Clement’s.

And now we go to the Pershing Square Sign Center where you can enjoy the play “SOMEONE SPECTACULAR” by playwright Domenica Feraud.

The stage takes place in a group therapy session where several strangers discuss issues related to love and loss.

Musically, original RENT co-stars Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp reunite at 54 BELOW to celebrate their friendship and history.

Their last shows will take place from 6 to 17 August.

And finally… Broadway performer Kevin Smith Kirkwood returns to Joe’s Pub to play Whitney Houston in the show “CLASSIC WHITNEY: THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY EDITION”. Kirkwood will perform songs with the iconic singer on her birthday, August 9.
