At the time of the fire, 285 people were working at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine in the Kemerovo region. At least 45 were injured. The condition of at least four people is critical. Several employees are said to have inhaled smoke.
The location of the other individuals in the mine is unknown. The emergency services have no contact with them. It is not clear whether the missing persons are still alive. Nineteen rescue teams are on the scene.
The fire started in a ventilation shaft, according to an emergency service source, reports the Russian state news agency TASS. The smoke then spread through the mine. There would have been no explosion and no damage. The ventilation system would still work.
