A 20-year-old woman from Enschede was beaten so hard in Lisbon on Saturday that she died a day later from the consequences. Her boyfriend, a 21-year-old Dutchman, has been arrested as a suspected perpetrator.

The incident took place around 6 p.m. Saturday at a hostel on Rua Frei Francisco Foreiro. The couple moved to the Portuguese capital more than a year ago, where they worked for a call center. The two lived in a hostel, but were said to have been evicted there on Saturday after repeated complaints about noise and smoke. That eviction escalated into a quarrel and an outburst of violence, Portuguese media described.

Hands covered in blood
The 20-year-old woman was beaten and kicked so hard, including in the head, that she became unconscious and had to be resuscitated on the spot. She died of injuries a day later. According to Portuguese media, the friend’s hands were covered in blood when he was arrested.

The 21-year-old Dutchman is said to have called the police himself. He was brought before a court in the Portuguese capital on Monday.
