MEXICO CITY –
MEXICO CITY (AP) — After years in the entertainment industry, musician and actor Drake Bell knows that things in Hollywood are not what they are painted to be. His most recent song, “Going Away”, talks about just that.
“It expresses what it is like to live under the spotlight and want to take a moment to have a little privacy and live a normal life for a while,” he said in a recent interview in Mexico City, where he will perform in concert on Friday at the Auditorio BB of the capital. “The glitz and glamor is just a facade and the reality is a stark contrast.”
“We create in our minds what we believe to be and sometimes it turns out that it is not, and that has a cost in your spirit, in your mind and in your emotions,” he added.
“Going Away” is the first song from his next album, which is in the mixing and mastering stage, after having already made all his recordings. The album does not yet have a release date, but he announced that he plans to release it before the end of the year and it will be called after his current tour: “Non-Stop Flight”. Bell said the release has been pushed back because “I can’t stop writing songs and adding them to the album.”
“Things keep happening in my life and I have to sit down and write about them,” said the singer-songwriter, who assured that he could continue composing forever. But for now he has decided to make a cut with 15 songs and leave the rest for another upcoming album.
For his concert at Auditorio BB, he will be accompanied by a full band and plans to play some of these fresh tunes. “It will be exciting to play these new songs and see what people think,” he said.
Bell described his new output as a mix of rockabilly, pop, rock and roll, punk, ballads, singer-songwriter songs and even a bit of reggaetón, all tied together in a genre he calls “cosmic pop.”
“Boom! It’s like a heavenly experience, like you’re going to the stars, like you’re going to outer space when you hear it, because there’s a lot going on,” he noted.
Things were very different in April for Bell, who made headlines for being reported missing and endangered by family members while in Florida.
“I was going through an emotional time, dealing with certain things at home and unfortunately I was in another entity and I was talking to my family and expressing how I felt, what I was worried about,” he said. “By accident when I got to my hotel I left my cell phone in the car, I went upstairs, it was very late and I went to sleep. My family was calling and calling and texting me and they couldn’t reach me because I was asleep. They were very concerned and you can read the rest on the internet. But it was fine.”
Bell pointed out that he has gone through a difficult period, but as an artist he takes it on the positive side, since he can express it through his art.
“In the last year, I’ve learned a lot about asking for help, asking friends and family and being able to get through things that I’ve been dealing with,” she said.
Among the things that have helped him feel better are the work on his new album, the company of loved ones, therapy (“it’s great,” he said) and being able to perform live.
“Having fans who support you at all times, who don’t just grab the headlines and really go and do their own detective work, filtering through all the nonsense that surrounds me and other artists, to get to the truth.” said. “It gives me a boost of energy and hope.”
Another thing that makes him feel good is Mexico, a country where he recorded one of his music videos and to which he has dedicated songs with verses in Spanish such as “Fuego Lento” and “Diosa”, whose video he took the opportunity to film in this visit to the country
“I would love to live in Mexico, I think I will be between California, Florida and Mexico,” he said. “It would be amazing to be able to come here without a suitcase and have everything in my house.”
After his concerts in Puebla and the capital, Bell will continue his Mexican tour in Querétaro, Guadalajara, Mexicali and Monterrey.
