Ryerson University in Toronto now offers a course for those who want to immerse themselves in the lives and music of the Toronto-born artists Drake and The Weeknd.

This is announced by the university in a press release, which CNN walks.

The course, called “Deconstructing Drake & The Weeknd” will be offered in the winter semester beginning January 2022, says Professor Dalton Higgins, who will teach the class, according to the newspaper.

“It’s time to get our Canadian rap and R & B icons recognized,” Higgins told CNN.

He says it’s important to take a closer look at what helped make Drake and The Weeknd successful.

The class will be offered as one of the main courses on the university’s bachelor’s program, Canada’s “first interdisciplinary professional music program,” according to the university.

Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Design at Ryerson University, Charles Falzon, tells CNN that interest in the course is high.

“I have a feeling it fills up very quickly,” Falzon told CNN.

Professor Dalton Higgins points out to The Independent that Americans and colleges already teach “all kinds of rock, folk, pop artists like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Bruce Springsteen” courses:

– So why should we not have a course on Drake and The Weeknd here in Toronto?

University professor Higgins has previously written a separate book about Drake. In 2012, he released Far From Over: The Music and Life of Drake.

Drake and The Weeknd are not the only artists who have received their own subject at American universities.

NOT ALONE: Beyoncé and Jay-Z have also previously been on the schedule for American students.

Georgetown University in Washington DC has previously offered courses on Jay-Z. Armstrong State University in Georgia has offered courses on the hip-hop group Outkast. And several universities, including Rutgers University in New Jersey and Arizona State University, have had Beyoncé as a subject.
