Draguignan renames one of its paths “Suzanne-Noël”, in homage to a pioneering woman in 20th century medicine

Unaware passers-by might believe that nothing is happening in the La Foux district. This is to disregard a whole section of Dracénoise history. It is on this modest road to Saint-Jean-de-la-Foux that the gaze falls on old stones, with the old hotel-restaurant Le Moulin de la Foux, a little further on an old building that looks like a castle. , or even a resort with a campsite. A subtle blend, no doubt, between past and present.

enlightened mind

Yesterday, for International Women’s Rights Day, the City chose to pay tribute to one of them in particular by renaming 933 chemin Saint-Jean-de-la-Foux, chemin Suzanne-Noël. Doctor of medicine born in Laon in 1878, died in Paris in 1954, Suzanne Noël is one of those who wrote their name in history. An enlightened mind who has served humanity.

“It’s not a big boulevard but at the same time the modesty of Suzanne Noël is related to this particular place of Saint-Jean-de-La Foux. A whole symbolism”said Mayor Richard Strambio. “A place where many fellow citizens come on vacation and which has also been, at times, the rehabilitation of which she was an expert”he continued. “For a woman of that time, studying medicine was something extremely rare and daring”recalled the city councilor before affirming that it is important to have women “of this caliber to shake up the lines”.

Suzanne Noël made history. She is particularly known for having, in extremely precarious conditions, participated in the war effort by operating the “broken mouths”, these soldiers who returned from the front wounded in the face. Specializing in reconstructive surgery, she worked on the physical and moral reconstruction of First World War soldiers.

Involved in the cause of women, she was at the initiative in 1923 of a demonstration to call on women not to pay their taxes because the State did not recognize any rights for them. She would later create the French section of the international Soroptimist service club, a women’s interprofessional movement.

A thought for mothers in Ukraine and Russia

“We must highlight these pioneers, even in a remote place in Dracénie. It has even more brilliance”, concluded the chosen one. In the presence of Christine Prémoselli, Brigitte Dubouis and Laureline Aubourg-Bastiani, respectively assistants and municipal councilor in charge of the fight against domestic violence, the plaque was unveiled not without a thought addressed to “mothers, wives, daughters from Ukraine and Russia who are particularly suffering in these troubled times. A very difficult moment to live when you are a woman, sensitivity is exacerbated in times of war”confided Christine Prémoselli. “I dare not imagine how they feel now for thirteen days already”.
