Dragon Quest XII is “a Dragon Quest for adults”, while the remake of the third is Octopath-like

A series of new and “new” Dragon Quest games revealed.

Today it is exactly 35 years since the first Dragon Quest was released in Japan, and that it’s something that Square Enix takes seriously was cemented when they held one anniversary stream early this morning.

The biggest news, of course, was that you slammed the door open Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. The next numbered part of the series has no date and no revealed formats. The teaser above basically only shows the logo, but in Japanese we hear: “Why do people live?”. It definitely looks like a dark twist on the jrpg series, and Yuji Horii calls the game “a Dragon Quest for adults”.

We will have to choose how our player characters will live, and Square Enix promises that they will change the (very!) Classic combat system. However, the command system must remain.

Dragon Quest XII was the headline for the stream, but we also got a lot more:

  • Dragon Quest III – “HD-2d”-remake in the same spirit as Octopath Traveler. Unknown formats.

  • Dragon Quest X – The Japan-exclusive online role-playing game gets both a new expansion and an offline mode. Maybe this will give the dream of release in the west a new life …?

  • Dragon Quest Treasures – Spinoff where we explore Mia and Erik’s childhood years, known from Dragon Quest XI. In other words: another kind of prequel Dragon Quest XI.

  • Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi – free-to-play and puzzle games for mobile formats.
