Dragon Ball Daima: everything you need to know about the new event series

This November 20, 2024 will be a special day. Indeed, it will mark the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Ball license. This year, to celebrate this anniversary, fans can discover a new anime, the aptly named Dragon Ball Daima. An event not to be missed.

During the 2023 edition of New York Comic-Con, Toei Animation unveils Dragon Ball Daima. This is the fifth official anime of the license. This is a new series produced by Akio Iyoku in which the late Akira Toriyama (who passed away on March 1, 2024) was heavily involved. He notably participated in the scenario, alongside Yuko Kakihara, and in the design of the characters. Suffice it to say that Son Goku’s new adventures were eagerly awaited. This is all the more true as they represent a powerful tribute to the mangaka.

What is it about?

The scenario takes place after the Majin Boo arc, that is to say after the end of the manga and that of Dragon Ball Z (which remember only represents the second part of the Dragon Ball manga, the Z being a creation for the animated version marking the break between the childish aspect of the beginning and the more mature side of the sequel). It’s definitely a direct sequel. Just when everyone thinks they can live in peace, a new threat arises. This one is named after Gomah, the king of Demons. Our heroes are then affected, following a wish from the latter, by a mysterious illness which makes them return to the size of a child. Which is somewhat reminiscent of the synopsis of Dragon Ball GT…

Moreover, for the anecdote, DB Daima does not take up the scenario of DB GT and is even integrated before the start of Dragon Ball Super. In short, to try to regain their size, Son Goku, Vegeta and the others must find new crystal balls. This is what leads them to discover a whole new world, driven by the desire to fight the Makaïoshins who arrive on Earth. To defeat these demonic beings, they need to regain all their power. A small nod to the origins of the manga, to compensate for the limits imposed by his new size, Son Goku takes back his Nyoi-bo (his fighting staff).

A wish for modernity

With its very chibi design, DB Daima offers a very cute look enhanced by vibrant colors. This is the promise of a dynamic adventure with a light tone. The child characters necessarily echo the first hours of Dragon Ball. Some shots are even obvious winks. However, the designs are much more modern than those of the time. Likewise, the animation was worked on in this sense. We can also note that Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, famous animator who worked on the license (we owe him in particular episode 44 of DBZ or the last one of DB GT), is also on the project. He also participated in the character design. For your information, he is the father of the Super Saiyan 4 stage.

How to view them

At the time of writing, two episodes, Conplot and Glorio, are available. The first has been broadcast since October 11 and we are entitled to a new one every week. It is possible to view them on platforms like ADN and Crunchyroll. The first episode was supposed to arrive this October 18 on Netflix but, as fans may have noticed, that was not the case. The streaming giant has not yet commented on this breach.
