The main department of education and culture of the Diocese of Wrzburg mourns the loss of Dr. Wolfgang Rie, the former head of the Catechetical (now Religious Education) Institute. He died on Monday, June 14th, at the age of 80, reports the press service of the Episcopal Ordinariate.
The religious educator, born in Hamburg in 1940, worked from 1984 to 1989 as a consultant for further education in religious education (head of training) in the school department of the Dizese, from 1990 to his retirement in 2005 he was a school councilor in the church service and head of the catechetical institute, and since 1993 also deputy Senior Head of the School and Education Department.
Before entering the service of the Dizese Wrzburg, Rie worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Bonn and Wrzburg and as a consultant for the Cusanuswerk after graduating from high school in Hamburg and the final theological exam at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main.
In his function as director of the institute, Rie made a decisive contribution to the establishment of the institute as a training center for religious education, a digitized specialist library and material center. He structured the training according to different professional groups and developed training plans; he himself was active in training for candidates for priesthood, chaplains and pastoral assistants. Since 1998 he has also been a member of the commission for the second service examination of this professional group. In addition, he worked as a religion teacher at various types of schools in religious education and as an author and speaker for theology in correspondence courses.
In addition to numerous other administrative and technical activities, he was particularly fond of writing school books for religious instruction in various types of school (Simple Life) as well as educational aids for religious education teachers such as the Star Hours Religion series. In this context, Rie founded the Wrzburger Hefte series together with Prlat Gnter Putz. Rie was active internationally by attending the Tanzanian partner dizese Mbinga as the first department with the school department. This was followed by the bullying suitcase and finally also the cooperation with other disciplines.
The Requiem for Woldgang Rie will be celebrated on Monday, July 5th, at 2 p.m. in the Wrzburger Neumnster.
