A total of 22 districts in seven states nationwide are experiencing a daily increase in new cases of COVID, the Union Health Ministry reported on Tuesday, calling it a “cause for concern.” The seven of these districts are in Kerala and two in Maharashtra. The rest of the daily cases are increasing in the northeastern districts. Lav Agarwal, co-health secretary, speaking to a reporter, said there are 22 districts in the country that are experiencing an upward trend in coronavirus cases in the past four weeks. This sudden spike in the districts is cause for concern and we have lined up discussions with states for the same.
Districts experience spike in new covid cases
In Kerala, districts like Alappuzha, Kottayam, Malappuram, Wayanad, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta are experiencing an increasing trend in daily covid cases. And the two districts of Maharashtra are Solapur and Beed. In Manipur, Chandel, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Noney and Thoubal also show a similar trend, with the exception of the southwestern hills of Khasi, the western hills of Garo and the southwestern Garo hills in Meghalaya, three locations – Papum Pare, West Siang and Lohit. in Arunachal, Nalbari in Assam and West Tripura in Tripura show the same cause for concern to officials.
In Malappuram (Kerala), a weekly figure of 1,428 cases was reported between 28 June and 4 July. The figure has now reached 2,270 last week, an increase of about 59%, Agarwal said. Also in Kottayam, the number of weekly cases rose to 849 from 63% last week from 519 weekly cases a month ago. We are in constant contact with states on how we can reduce the number of covid cases using early detection and containment, he added.

Even though the number of active COVID-19 cases has fallen to less than 4 lakh from a maximum of 37 lakh, the cases have now spread over a limited geography. The increase in covid cases has made it mandatory to change our approach to containment, restrictions and strict monitoring of appropriate Covid behavior, the health secretary said. He also added that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Interior had issued guidelines, specifying the restrictions that should be imposed where cases are high. Dr VK Paul, Member, NITI Aayog was also present at the press conference. He said it wouldn’t be fair to say the second wave of COVID-19 is over. Things cannot be taken for granted as the virus is not yet tired. The behavior of the virus cannot be taken for granted by anyone, he concluded.
