Brunswick. dr Thorsten Kornblum, Mayor of the City of Braunschweig, was elected Chairman of the Federal SGK with 97.1 percent of the votes at the digital delegates’ meeting of the Social Democratic Community for Local Politics in the Federal Republic of Germany (SGK) this Saturday. This is reported by the SGK on its website.
The Federal SGK is the coalition of social democratic local politicians in the SPD. Their tasks include representing interests in relation to the Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the Federal Government, as well as developing recommendations and working aids for practical politics in the municipal representations and corporations, according to the website.
Municipalities face major challenges
SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert warmly congratulated Thorsten Kornblum on his election and underscored the importance of social-democratic local politics: “As mayor of the city of Braunschweig, he knows from his daily work experience the challenges that local authorities in Germany face. From the expansion of all-day care to the mobility turnaround and the creation of affordable housing, cities and communities are facing enormous challenges,” he emphasizes.
Thorsten Kornblum said on the occasion of his election: “Social democracy needs strong municipalities. Strong municipalities need committed honorary and full-time local politicians. The SGK has always been the strong voice for social-democratic politics in cities, districts and communities. I am very pleased about the election as chairman of the Federal SGK and thank the delegates for their trust. In a crisis-ridden time, we as local politicians want to offer our fellow citizens security and good solutions through pragmatic politics.”
“Don’t overwhelm households and companies”
The task will be to develop the cities, districts and municipalities into climate-neutral locations, to successfully transform the economy, to ensure local public services and to implement administrative digitization. It is important to maintain a sense of proportion, not to overwhelm private households and companies and not to forget social cohesion. That will be decided when it comes to implementation in the municipalities. And that’s why you need a strong social democracy with strong local politicians. “We want to remain THE local party in the future. The Bundes-SGK stands for strong local self-government in Germany and Europe!” Kornblum concluded.
The following were elected as deputy chairmen: Thomas Beyer, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Wismar, Dr. Daniela Harsch, mayor for social affairs, order and culture of the city of Tübingen, Frank Meyer, mayor of the city of Krefeld, Mike Schubert, mayor of the city of Potsdam and Andreas Siebert, district administrator of the district of Kassel.
