Dr. Muhammad Abu Namous Stays in Gaza to Treat Patients, Family Leaves for Egypt – Moldovan Citizenship Gazans Allowed to Leave

Dr. Muhammad Abu Namous was overcome with strong emotions on Tuesday when he embraced, perhaps for the last time, his daughter as his family prepared to leave Gaza for Egypt at the Rafah border crossing, after he decided to remain in the Strip to care for thousands of people wounded as a result of the Israeli bombing.

The Abu Namous family, which holds Moldovan citizenship, is among hundreds of Gazans who hold foreign passports and are allowed to leave for Egypt through the crossing, which is the only way out of the besieged Palestinian enclave and is not located on the Israeli border.

“There is no other way out of this situation,” Abu Namous told Reuters, as he sat next to his wife and daughter in the waiting area. “There is no safety here. The entire Gaza Strip is unsafe. That’s why it’s better for me to get them out so I can focus on my work treating patients.” “.

He added, “I will definitely take them out, but I will remain in the Gaza Strip and will not leave it.”

According to Abu Namous, an orthopedic surgeon, he moved his family from the Jabalia camp in northern Gaza at the start of the Israeli raids to the Al-Zahraa residential area and then to the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, but finding a safe place for the family was elusive.

For her part, Dina, Abu Namous’s daughter, said that she was overwhelmed with mixed feelings whenever she remembered that she might leave the Gaza Strip, adding: “We will go there, where there is electricity, water, the Internet and everything, but at the same time I am sad because my father will remain here.”

According to estimates by health officials in Gaza, Israeli raids have so far claimed the lives of more than 10,000 Palestinians, about 40 percent of whom are children, which prompted United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to warn that Gaza is turning into a “cemetery for children.”
