Dr. Kostadin Kostadinov: China is the only great power that is an impartial mediator for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine –

– Dr. Kostadinov, a few days ago there was a telephone conversation between the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. The conversation was initiated by the Ukrainian president, many things were said, but the most important thing is that the Chinese president once again emphasized that dialogue and negotiations are the only possible way to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. What do you think the effect of this conversation would be?

– Dr. Kostadinov: The case cannot be considered without thinking about a possible option for achieving some positive result for both sides, because otherwise we risk going to the other option – in which both countries will wage war, while one of them won. This is something that has happened many times in history, but it has always cost an awful lot of lives and ruined economies. In this particular case, however, such a peace initiative could only be successful if a great power stood behind it. Of the five great powers at the moment – since Russia is involved in the conflict, only the other four could participate, but unfortunately, of these four – the US, England and France prefer to inflame the conflict and participate in it as “helpers” of Ukraine, that is, they become a party to the conflict. While China in this particular case is the only one of the five great powers that appears in the role of a truly impartial mediator.

In truth, as a great power, they could offer an option for mediation and for achieving some kind of peaceful outcome to the war that would eliminate the severe further consequences of the deepening of the military conflict.

Because only one great power can make another great power comply. In the specific case, when Xi was in Russia, we saw that the Russian president was willing to talk, but at the moment, it seems that there is no such thing on the part of the Ukrainian president. But the will of the Chinese president in this particular case is indicative, because it is now possible – if of course both sides want it – for peace negotiations that go “under the hood”, the patronage. or the mediation – no matter what we call it – of one of the other great powers, which will provide a guarantor, external, for the achievement of a truly lasting peace in Ukraine.
