We spoke with Dr. Gabriel Serrano, the creator behind the Sesderma brand, about the evolution of cosmetics and what the future of skin care looks like.
“Listening to your ’89 skin”. Can you tell us more about this trip?
My vocation for medicine comes from my family. My father was a surgeon, and I spent many years listening to him. I became a dermatologist by a very special coincidence: one of my sisters developed vitiligo. This is where my interest in dermatology came from, and especially in the research and treatment of the most complex skin pathologies. The year 1976 marked a crucial turning point when I set up my own dermatology clinic in Valencia. I saw the pressing need for customized skin care products to address the distinct dermatological conditions of my patients. This prompted me to establish Sesderma Laboratories in 1989, a platform through which I could provide effective solutions for skin care concerns. I believe we have built a legacy of exceptional patient care and continuous innovation through Sesderma and Mediderma products and treatments.
Do we need to change our skin care ritual even if the winters are not so cold anymore?
Increasing temperature, solar radiation and decreasing humidity will promote aging or skin cancer. Day and night change, the temperature rises, and the disruption of the circadian rhythm causes premature aging of tissues and a greater predisposition to develop skin diseases.
Very important: we must avoid at all costs such as burning children’s skin because it will leave a memory in the skin, a memory that predisposes it to suffer changes, tumors and melanomas.
We are making great progress in nutricosmetics. We now know that certain nutrients influence not only the appearance of the skin, but also its health, so good protection from the inside is essential.
The skin needs many types of active ingredients, and the most complete routine is the one that allows you to introduce different types of ingredients both in the morning and in the evening. Therefore, for example, we always choose antioxidants such as vitamin C, ferulic acid or resveratrol in the morning. These can be found in our C-VIT line and especially in C-VIT 5 Liposomed Serum, which contains an innovative formula with five types of liposomal vitamin C and whose anti-aging benefits are visible from the first applications, in addition to rendering the glow.
At night, we can introduce stronger ingredients such as HP Retinoate, one of the most effective and safe new generation retinoids found in the Retisil formula, Sesderma’s latest launch. Finally, I always insist on using sunscreen all year round.
What are the top ingredients in Sesderma products?
This is a difficult question because the laboratories have more than 600 references between Sesderma and Mediderma. There are classic ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid, with which we have been working for many years, but if something characterizes us, it is innovation and the constant search for different formulas and active ingredients with which to develop further. effective and safer products. The use of cysteamine and azelaic acid in depigmenting treatments represented a turning point: we can offer much more effective solutions for the removal of various skin pigmentations. We have also made great progress in the quality of different types of retinol and the encapsulation in nano-sized liposomes of retinol and retinoids. Sesderma has also recently developed new types of liposomes, such as chitosomes, which are applied in oral sunscreens. Sesderma’s Sunses line exemplifies this innovation. In addition, the company has shown a strong interest in the application of exosomes in dermatology.
Why is technology so important in skin care?
Sesderma has been a pioneer in the use of nanotechnology since 2008. We are one of the few laboratories in the world that has entire product lines formulated with this technology, which allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin and are therefore much more effective. My wish is to continue the research in professional treatments and to develop dermocosmetic products adapted to each problem.
What are the current challenges in this industry?
I have always been dedicated to innovation and research, as I believe this is the path to success. What is important is not what we have done, which is a lot anyway, but what remains to be done.
One of the issues that most concerns my patients in my office, and people in general, is the fight against time and aging, what will happen to our physical appearance and our health as we age. If life expectancy has already increased in recent years, it will increase even more because medicine advances, because we take better care of ourselves and eat better. On the one hand, we work with topical agents such as various forms of retinol, vitamin C, peptides, exosomes, dermal fillers or botox-like ingredients, plus all laser devices, radio frequencies and so on, to embrace the passage of time rather than to fight him. It’s not about fighting age, it’s about allying with it in a friendly and lasting way, because beauty is evolutionary.
Will AI be a part of Sesderma’s evolution?
Although it is still in research, I think we need to know what it can bring us and try to take advantage of it. I am very optimistic and believe that artificial intelligence, well focused and in an ethical way, can help us expand services, access new markets, create new products or even enable new business models. I always say: renew or die.
