Dr. Dre hasn’t launched a project in six years, but that may change soon.
The rap icon is working on new music for the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise, according to Snoop Dogg. Speaking to the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, Dre’s longtime collaborator revealed that Dre is back in the lab creating “great shitty music.”
“I know he’s in the studio,” said Snoop, who has also been involved in the GTA recording sessions. “I know he’s making great shitty music. And some of his music is related to the GTA game that is coming out. So I think that will be the way their music will be released, through the GTA video game.
Dre’s last project was 2015’s Compton, inspired by the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. Earlier this year, there were reports that he was reliving his ill-fated Detox album after being released from the hospital for a brain aneurysm.
In February, Aftermath producer DJ Silk featured a new track from Dre with lyrics about his brain aneurysm and the highly publicized divorce from Nicole Young.
“Trying to kill me with those lies and that perjury,” Dre raps. “I see you trying to fuck me while I’m in surgery / And ICU, deathbed for shit money / Greedy bitch, take a picture / Girl, you know how the money is made.”
Speaking to DJ Khaled’s “The First One” podcast, Rick Ross also confirmed that the rap legend was preparing new music. “He’s working on his project, which is incredible, sonorous,” he said. “I’ve never heard a kid so meticulous with these improvisations and stuff, but that’s what you love about Dre.”
