DOn Sunday, in several towns in the Congo, activists from the UNC party – Union for the Congolese Nation – prayed for the acquittal of their leader Vital Kamerhe, sentenced at first instance to twenty years of forced labor for corruption. The appeal trial began on Monday, banned from television broadcasting, while the accused, ill and on respiratory assistance, was represented by his lawyers.
Defense lawyers pleaded acquittal, arguing that in the case of the prefabricated houses that were to be built as part of the President’s Hundred Day Program, the corruption charges could never be proven. On the other hand, all the property and assets of the former chief of staff of President Tshisekedi were seized, which jeopardizes his means of defense and prevents him, for example, from having recourse to foreign lawyers.
