dr Christian Franckenstein is the newly elected board member of the Friends of the HFF Munich eV
New Board of Directors at the Friends of the HFF Munich eV – Dr. Christian Franckenstein takes over the office of 1st Chairman from Professor Dr. Klaus Schaefer, who chaired the association for 20 years.
dr Christian Franckenstein, CEO of Bavaria Film GmbH, was elected 1st chairman at the general meeting of the Friends of the University of Television and Film (HFF) Munich eV last Tuesday, March 22, 2022. HFF alumna Judith Erber, head of the funding department and film consultant at FFF Bayern, and Kristina Mueller-Stöfen, agent at the MIDPOINT agency, are new members of the board. Susanne Freyer, Managing Director/Producer Akzente Film GmbH, HFF alumna Gabriele M. Walther, Managing Partner Caligari Film- und Fernsehproduktions GmbH and HFF alumnus Sven Burgemeister, Producer/Managing Director TV60Filmproduktion GmbH were re-elected. HFF President Prof. Bettina Reitz is the second chairwoman of the association by virtue of her office. Prof. Dr. Johannes Kreile did not stand for election. He was treasurer of the association for more than 20 years and made numerous projects possible, including the Industry Rendezvous, which takes place annually as part of the Munich Film Festival. All board members exercise their office on a voluntary basis.
dr Christian Franckenstein, CEO of Bavaria Film GmbH: “It is both a great honor and a pleasure for me to be able to chair the Association of Friends of HFF Munich. Under the more than 20-year leadership of Klaus Schaefer and Johannes Kreile as prudent treasurer, the association initiated important projects for the HFF Munich and its students and financially supported outstanding graduation films. The newly elected board of our association will of course ensure continuity in this sense. At the same time, we also want to be open to always adapting the services of the association to the challenges of our time. Film is and remains an important cultural and economic component with great future prospects. The HFF students are needed. We’re here to support them on their journey.”
Since it was founded in 1968, the Friends of HFF Munich eV has supported the University of Television and Film Munich and the students in their work, including by collecting and providing funds and donations in kind for teaching, for the infrastructure, for special events and, above all, for the Final financing for outstanding student films. The Circle of Friends was also able to provide valuable support in the social area – such as most recently with the Corona aid for students who had gotten into financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic. In addition, the circle of friends is the legal entity of the Munich script workshop and its various further education programs. For many years it has also been part of the Förderkreis Kunstareal, the merger of all Fördervereine in the Kunstareal Munich.
The previous 1st chairman Prof. Dr. Klaus Schaefer no longer stood for election. During his tenure, he was committed to expanding the funding of student film projects because, in his opinion, they “represent the filmmakers’ entry ticket into the industry”. In the 20 years of its chairmanship, the circle of friends has become an important partner for the HFF Munich, providing financial support to the film school for events such as the annual industry screenings and the annual show as an open-air cinema. Prof. Dr. Klaus Schaefer also accompanied the further development of the script workshop in Munich and supported it with his legal expertise.
professor dr Klaus Schaefer: “The 20 years as chairman of the circle of friends have given me great pleasure. Thanks to the support of our friends and sponsors, we were able to initiate or accompany many things that might have fallen by the wayside in normal university operations with their financial constraints. With Christian Franckenstein, the association now has a new chairman who knows the media landscape in all its challenges and will therefore be an excellent partner for the HFF Munich and its members and students. I wish him every success and all the best in his new position.”
HFF President Professor Bettina Reitz: “I would like to thank Prof. Klaus Schaefer and Prof. Johannes Kreile for their great commitment to the Friends of the HFF Munich. I would like to particularly emphasize their support over the past two years with a Corona aid fund for students who have gotten into financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic. Within a very short time we were able to set up this invaluable aid project together and help numerous students through the difficult time for all of us. Over the years, Klaus Schaefer has always impressed me with his contagious enthusiasm for promoting up-and-coming films and their makers. His desire to help early career talents break into the industry has always been paramount to him.
that dr I am very pleased that Christian Franckenstein is now taking over the chairmanship of the association – because hardly anyone knows better than he does what the industry expects from young filmmakers, whom he will support in a special way with the circle of friends in the future. His expertise and his openness to young talents make him a chairman of the HFF Munich Circle of Friends, with whom we can look forward to a fruitful and exciting collaboration.”
