Currently we have a wide range of contraceptive options that adapt to the different stages of our life and health conditions. In the words of Dr. Raquel Carracedo “there are numerous contraceptive proposals such as barrier methods, hormonal contraceptives and intrauterine devices (IUD).” All of them available with multiple variations according to the individual needs of each woman.
One of the best known methods is condom male, belonging to the barrier methods. However, gynecologist Raquel Carracedo, from The Women’s Clinic in Santiago de Compostela, places special emphasis on hormonal methodswhich can be subdivided into pills, vaginal rings and patches. “The most used are hormonal contraceptives, especially the pill,” says the specialist.
Advances in science have allowed pillscontraceptives move towards formulas with fewer side effects. “A lot has evolved in the composition of the pills, because they are now made with low doses or even without estrogens,” explains Carracedo.
This innovation is especially useful for women with certain previous pathologies who could not opt for the conventional pill due to its high hormonal content. “Pills without estrogen are often chosen for women who previously did not have the option of taking the pill because they suffered from previous illnesses or pathologies,” he adds. This includes women with circulatory problems or smokers, for whom traditional pills are contraindicated after a certain age.
Another key option is intrauterine devices (DIU), which exist in two main variants: DIU of metal (such as copper, gold, or silver) and IUDs hormonal. “Hormonal IUDs carry a hormonal load that is slowly released inside the uterus and makes the endometrium not viable to accommodate a pregnancy,” details the doctor. Unlike other hormonal methods that have a more general impact on the body, these devices act localized waywhich reduces its side effects.
Traditionally, IUDs were recommended for women who they had already had childrensince the uterus, having gone through pregnancies, usually has a larger cavity. However, Carracedo highlights that now “a small IUD is also being used for girls with younger uteruses that have not dilated due to the existence of a pregnancy.” This significantly expands options for young or childless women.
Customize according to each woman
Raquel Carracedo highlights the importance of individualize contraceptive methods according to the particular needs of each woman: “There are multiple contraceptive options, they must be personalized depending on the age, previous pathologies and the particular needs of each woman.” This ensures that any woman, regardless of her stage of life, has access to a safe and effective method to avoid unwanted pregnancy until she decides otherwise.
The range of contraceptive alternatives available today not only offers greater security, but also freedom of choice, allowing each woman to make informed decisions about her reproductive health and family planning.
