Third-world living conditions hold up well in the homes of Xanthi at the Democritus University of Thrace. The tragic situations with mold, cockroaches and wild animals moving around outside the buildings of Estia had been highlighted by the documentonews.gr from the beginning of the year with revealing photos from the students. This time a letter was sent to the focal students to vacate the A2 building to be renovated (70 rooms in total and about 35 students live there). According to the letter from the Rector’s Authorities, the evacuation must take place within 5 days (until March 7).
At the same time, the residents of the A2 building have nowhere to go, since without any help from the foundation, they will have to move their things to the A1 building. The conditions there, as the residents themselves complain, are equally tragic. As they point out “this is the 2nd year that this renovation continues. It was supposed to be over by December.” Sources of documentonews.gr say that the already existing renovations in building B have not solved any problem and they characterize them as “skinny” since windows have so far not been changed in a building with too many problems.
“The students of building A2 of the student residences of Xanthi were informed on 1/3/24 that within 5 days we will have to leave our rooms and evacuate the building.
At the time we are being asked to move, the hostel club has been closed for almost 2 weeks for an unknown period of time, with the result that many residents of the building have returned to their cities.
Also, the exam is still ongoing for many of us. So, under these circumstances, how is it possible to move within a few days without any help from the university, which is threatening to cut off our electricity, water and internet after the deadline on 3/7/ 24? The university itself had committed with its announcement on 6/11/23 that we will move to the renovated building B2 [1].
However, the renovation and furnishing of the B2 building has been delayed and so they want to move us to rooms in other buildings which are in a poor condition, with broken plumbing, moisture-mold issues, missing furniture, etc. At the same time, the evacuation of building A2, the third building in a row to be vacated after B1 and B2, will result in a further reduction in the number of rooms in the student residences of Xanthi, which will create a problem in the free accommodation of first-year students in September 2024.
We will not accept to become a pawn between contractors and the university while millions are being played between them. As residents of building A2, after meetings we have held, we are determined to remain in our building until the renovation and furnishing of building B2 is complete. We consider the university’s threats unacceptable and demand that we move to the B2 building, as the rectorship itself committed in its announcement. We still support our decision from 1/2/24, a decision supported by both the Xanthi Student Boarding Association and the Xanthi Student Association, and we will not take a single step back.
Assembly of residents of building A2 of Xanthi student residences”.
