At his meeting with President Rumen Radev, the leader of the DPS, Mustafa Karadai, spoke extremely disparagingly of the joint efforts of GERB-SDS and PP-DB since the start of the parliament, after which he called for the formation of a governing majority and a regular government first. Karadayi developed these at today’s second round of presidential consultations with parliamentary formations on the possibility of forming a cabinet.
The leader of the DPS pointed out that on five consecutive votes the voters created the same structure of the parliament, refusing to empower a separate political force. However, Karadai believes, the politicians have not learned their lesson and have now wasted the first 20 days of the new National Assembly. “Instead of dealing with how to structure a majority in the National Assembly to issue a regular cabinet, and with what topics to deal with this majority and cabinet, we observe that the first two political forces entered the field of populism, defining laws , to be considered without a clear entity bearing responsibility for these actions,” he stated. And then he assessed what was happening as “wasted time.” Thus, in practice, he rejected the general legislative program prepared by GERB-SDS and PP-DB.
Karadai launched into a long description of what he considers his party’s achievements, recalling that when the DPS was in charge of the country, Bulgaria became a member of the EU and NATO. “Apparently, DPS needs to come to power in order to enter Schengen and the Eurozone,” he stated confidently.
In turn, Radev praised his caretaker governments, which, according to him, managed to secure the first tranche of European funds under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, as well as under European operational programs. He then emphasized that in the future the country needs a regular government to continue in the same direction and expressed hope that the DPS will help in this. Karadayi gladly agreed, but reminded that his party declared itself as an opposition to the majority, which, according to him, was formed between GERB-SDS and PP-DB.
A little later, the leader of the DPS pointed out to the media that the leading coalitions are pushing the country towards another early election, and their conversation is now more focused on shifting responsibility if we reach a new vote than on resolving the situation. He declined to comment on the possibility of the movement getting a third term as a cabinet, but called for dialogue to form a coalition government.
WITH “REVIVAL”: COAL POWER PLANTS AND TURNOVERS
First of all, today the president met with “Vazrazhdane”. In front of Radev, the leader of the nationalists Kostadin Kostadinov assured that his party has no intention of being in opposition, but wants to govern and is ready to propose a cabinet if it receives a mandate for this. As the main priority of the parliament, he singled out the adoption of a state budget. He described as unprecedented the situation in which we do not have one in April. Kostadinov promised that he would work to limit the power of the chief prosecutor. And he reminded that in the previous parliament formed a majority around the proposal of “Vazrazhdane” on the investigative mechanism of the Chief of Public Prosecutions.
Kostadinov has widely advertised his party’s initiative to hold a national referendum on retaining the leva as the national currency. He expressed confidence that enough signatures had been collected to make this poll mandatory. He then accused GERB-SDS and PP-DB of a “hidden, creeping coup d’état” because they are talking about adopting laws related to the introduction of the euro, and meanwhile “sweeping under the carpet” the proposal for a referendum.
The leader of the nationalists demanded that the caretaker government implement the decision of the previous parliament to preservation of the Bulgarian power plants, working on coal. For his part, Radev assured him that the cabinet is actively negotiating with the European Commission, before which we have made a commitment to close the coal plants. According to the president, it is difficult to change a commitment once made, but he expects by the end of April this year that there will be a result of the negotiations.
After the meeting, Kostadinov commented to journalists that even if a government is formed with the first or second mandate, it will not be sustainable and this would represent unnecessary political agony. “Are we expecting the third mandate? We want it!”, confidently declared the nationalist leader. He refused to comment on the issue of when the mandates would be handed out, arguing that it was the president’s decision. According to him, “Vazrazhdane” would talk with the other formations for a majority to change the Constitution in its part on the judiciary, but only if it gets support for its own legislative initiatives – and he gave as an example his party’s request to remove the American military presence in our country and to adopt a law against “foreign agents”.
UPCOMING
After yesterday talks with the leaders of GERB-SDS and PP-DB, today the head of state welcomes representatives of the other political forces in the National Assembly. Next comes BSP at 1 p.m. and finally ITN at 3 p.m.
There was no particular result at yesterday’s talks, as no change was noticed in the politicians’ positions. GERB-SDS want a coalition with PP-DB, but the right-wing coalition refuses and wants to get the second mandate.
Radev himself, as it turned out, is in a hurry with the consultations, because he does not want to be accused that by delaying them, he is trying to secure “uncontrolled power”.
