DPR to convene BRIN-BMKG due to difference in severe storm forecasts

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

DPR Deputy Chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said his party would convene the two institutions most responsible for reporting the bad weather terrible storm that will affect the area Greater Jakarta until the end of 2022.

Dasco’s statement responds to two different pieces of information from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding bad weather in Jabodetabek from 28 to 31 December.

According to Dasco, his party wants the two institutions to coordinate before broadcasting information to the public.

“We have asked the technical committee on the matter which is responsible for BRIN and BMKG to convene and synchronize it so that the two institutions integrate the data with each other before releasing it to the public,” Dasco told the parliament complex on Wednesday (28/12 ).

“So that people who are concerned about the weather won’t be even more concerned because the statements are similar but somewhat different,” he added.

However, he asked the audience not to discuss this further. Because, in principle, both BRIN and BMKG only remind the public to be careful.

“There is a risk of bad weather between the 28th and 30th [Desember] It’s better if we ask the community during that time to do a lot of activities at home,” she said.

BRIN and BMKG have previously provided differing forecasts regarding the potential for severe storms to hit the Jabodetabek area in the last few days before the end of the year.

BRIN researcher Erma Yulihastin expects extreme rains and severe storms to hit the Jabodetabek area. According to him, the weather conditions will cause flooding.

On the other hand, BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati said the potential for a severe storm would move away from Jabodetabek and into North Papua. Dwikorita also denied that heavy rains will occur today, Wednesday (28/12).

According to him, the potential for heavy rains will occur later on Thursday (12/29).

“So, God willing, according to this forecast, West Java, Jabodetabek until December 28, God willing, can still be controlled, is still relatively safe, only as of December 29. [Desember] According to our predictions, we are starting to distrust,” he said during an online press conference on Tuesday (27/12).
