Jakarta –
The investment of PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk through its subsidiary Telkomsel to PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk has been in the spotlight lately. This investment is highlighted because it is said to be a loss.
Member of Commission VI Nusron Wahid gave his views regarding the investment.
“Where is it considered a loss? Those who say the loss are only those who want to disrupt the digital investment climate in Indonesia. You have to see when you enter the price, when you sell it. How come Wong hasn’t been sold, how come he has lost? What’s important is that the fundamentals are good. Cook the price. while a reference is being made. It’s inconsequential,” said Nusron in his statement, Sunday (29/5/2022).
According to Nuston, there are two advantages to investing in GoTo. First, Telkomsel’s data sales are included in the digital ecosystem so that the turnover increases. Second, the price when sold later.
“If it hasn’t been sold, don’t consider it a loss, I’m sure later when the price is high, it will definitely be a valuation and the book will make a profit,” he said.
Nusron added that this investment must be seen in the long term. He continued, this is actually an effective step to prevent the domination of foreign companies and of course encourage the national digital ecosystem to grow.
As is known, BUMN investments in a number of startups, such as GoTo, have also established MDI ventures to invest in various local startups. Then there is Bank Mandiri through Mandiri Capital which has invested in 23 local startups, some of which are KoinWorks, Crowde, and Investree. There is also BRI that is doing the same thing through BRI Ventures to 21 companies, one of which is a local shoe manufacturer startup, Brodo.
According to Nusron, this is a long-term strategy in an effort to build Indonesia’s digital ecosystem. The presence of BUMN investments in local startups, he said, could answer concerns about the dominance of foreign investor ownership in Indonesian startups.
“This also provides economic benefits and added value for the people of Indonesia,” said Nusron.
He also admitted that he was not worried even though a number of local startups had their share prices declining. He considered that this was not a big problem, especially for startups that had gone public.
“Especially for start-ups that have conducted an IPO on the stock exchange, don’t judge only by stock price movements, such as the GoTo stock case, which last week was said to be a loss, even though it was only a potential loss for a moment. Even as of May 27, GoTo’s stock price rose again which caused there is a potential profit of around Rp 800 billion for Telkom,” said Nusron.
