DPA: Russia plans to close areas in the Black Sea on Saturday

The Russian plan has been met with sharp criticism from the EU, Ukraine and NATO. Among other things, they point out that this will constitute a violation of the Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Russia claims the Crimean peninsula, a Ukrainian territory annexed by Russia in 2014, is Russian territory. However, this has not been internationally recognized, and in the wake of the annexation, a large number of sanctions have been imposed on Russia.

Russia has recently held a large-scale military exercise on the Crimean peninsula and in the border areas with Ukraine, which has led to increased tensions in the area. However, the Moscow authorities say that these forces are now being withdrawn.
