Dozens of tigers die in South Vietnam zoos due to bird flu – Star Jogja FM

STARJOGJA.COM, INFORMATION – More than a dozen tiger carcasses at a zoo in southern Vietnam were burned. The animals died because of bird flu.

State media VNExpress reported that a caretaker at Vuon Xoai zoo in Bien Hoa city said the animals were fed raw chicken bought from a nearby farm. The panther and 20 tigers, including several cubs, weighed between 10 and 120 kilograms when they died. The carcasses of the animals were burned and buried there.

“The tigers died so quickly. They looked weak, refused to eat and died after two days of getting sick,” said zoo manager Nguyen Ba Phuc.

Samples taken from the tigers were positive for H5N1, the virus that causes bird flu.

The virus was first identified in 1959 and became a widespread and deadly threat to migratory and domestic birds. The virus has evolved, and in recent years H5N1 has been found in an increasing number of animals, from dogs and cats to sea lions and polar bears.

In cats, scientists have found that the virus attacks the brain, damages and covers blood vessels, and causes seizures and death.

More than 20 other tigers were isolated for investigation. There are around 3,000 other animals in the zoo, including lions, bears, rhinos, hippos and giraffes.

VNE Express reported that 30 workers caring for the tiger tested negative for bird flu and were in normal health. The newspaper also reported another outbreak at a zoo in the nearby Long An area, where 27 tigers and three lions died within a week in September.

Unusual strains of the flu that originated from animals are sometimes found in humans. Health officials in the United States said Thursday that two California dairy farm workers were infected – bringing the total number of cases found in the country to 16 in 2024.
