Anonymously handing in a stolen traffic sign: this action is a success on Terschelling. Many and often plates were stolen on the Frisian Wadden Island, and the municipal council wanted to do something about it.
“So many road signs disappeared, which created very unsafe situations,” says Mayor Caroline van der Pol. Costs also started to skyrocket. “Each plate costs around 300 euros.”
That is why an action was devised to get plates back. Today people are allowed to hand in plates without consequences. “But as soon as people heard about the action, the signs already arrived, dozens of them have already been handed in to our field service, the police and the Maritime Institute,” says the mayor.
But today is really the last day. “From tomorrow, you will again face a hefty fine,” she emphasizes.
Not a fan of
The mayor was Omrop Fryslân initially not charmed by the plan. “I have to be honest it wasn’t my idea,” she says. “I was initially opposed to this move. But it works.”
