59 newly found sarcophagi have been presented in Egypt. The wooden coffins are about 2500 years old and well preserved.
Most of them have mummies; according to archaeologists, these are priests and high officials of the 26th Dynasty. The site is the Unesco World Heritage Site of Sakkara, just south of Cairo. In ancient times there was a large cemetery there.
The sarcophagi were hidden in three shafts 10 to 12 meters deep. They were found in August, along with dozens of grave statues. Dozens more coffins have been discovered in recent days, but they have not yet been shown to the public.
