Dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrested in front of the New York Stock Exchange – Le1

On Monday, October 14, 2024, more than 200 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested during a sit-in in front of the New York Stock Exchange, demanding an end to US support for Israel’s war in Gaza.

This Monday, in front of the imposing New York Stock Exchange, a pro-Palestinian demonstration took place without disrupting stock exchanges, nor allowing demonstrators to access the famous trading room. Yet the echo of their slogans resonated powerfully, revealing the depth of militant commitment in the face of a divisive international situation.

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) security quickly cordoned off a protective perimeter around the building, located on Broad Street in the heart of Lower Manhattan. The protesters, made up largely of activists from groups such as Jewish Voice for Peacechanted vibrant phrases like “Let Gaza live” and “Stop financing genocide”, thus defying the iconic Wall Street financial institution.

If the demonstrators were unable to enter the interior of the Stock Exchange, several dozen of them crossed a security barrier erected by the police outside. This symbolic gesture, marked by defiance, did not however degenerate: although tensions arose in the face of the reinforced presence of the police, the entire mobilization remained largely peaceful, but marked by the seriousness of a context of war and humanitarian injustices.

This demonstration is part of a wave of protests which is shaking the United States, while the conflict in Gaza worsens and the unwavering support of the American authorities for Israel is increasingly criticized. In a climate where the human losses and the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave shock world opinion, voices from the streets are being raised, trying to weigh in on a feverish international debate.

Police arrests for disturbing public order and violating security protocols have only fueled activists’ determination. These, although far from the spheres of power, swear to continue their actions until their calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to American funding for the Israeli army are finally heard. Thus, the message of hope and resistance continues to vibrate, even in the heart of the most inaccessible institutions.
