Much of the twelve-story building collapsed during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. The missing are residents of the building. It is not clear if they were at home. Some apartments belong to people who only live there in winter.

Hundreds of firefighters and police from miles around the US coastal town have mobilized en masse to search the rubble in Surfside. Detection dogs are also used.

On the other side of the building, the fire brigade rescued residents from balconies, among other things using ladders.
‘Like a bomb has been hit’
Half of the building has collapsed like a house of cards on the sea side. It is still unknown how many people were in the building with more than 130 apartments. These were large, rather expensive apartments, some of which were also offered for sale.

The building dates from 1981. It is still unclear how the building could collapse. For Mayor Burkett it is still a complete mystery: “I cannot describe it, it is as if a bomb has been hit, as if it were a building like those in the Third World suddenly collapse, it has become flat as a pancake, from each floor is less than a foot of rubble left.”
