KLM will cancel 42 flights departing Schiphol on Monday. This happens after a previous call from the airport to carry fewer passengers. Schiphol is struggling with a shortage of security personnel, which means that as of the end of October, 9,250 fewer passengers can depart each day than previously stated.
KLM has also canceled dozens of flights in the past few days due to the situation at Schiphol. Sunday is 22. A Schiphol spokesperson informs NU.nl that it is left with those cancellations. Other airlines did not cancel flights on Sunday due to a lack of security.
The spokesperson cannot say how things will go in the next few days at Schiphol. “An independent slot coordinator will look into the details in the next period, together with the airlines.” A KLM spokesperson cannot say anything about the next few days. “It’s really watched on a daily basis,” he says.
On Thursday it was announced that Dick Benschop will step down as Schiphol’s boss. The pressure on the CEO has increased after months of chaos caused by shortages.
KLM is Schiphol’s biggest user. The company previously said it was “very sorry” about the course of events. The spokesperson points out that the airline prefers not to cancel flights, but does so with passengers in mind.
