According to the Secretariat for Security and Civil Defense in the Mexican state of Puebla, they were held in the city of Amozoc for three days. Eventually, a migrant from Honduras managed to raise the alarm by making an emergency call.
After a search, authorities found 45 women, 26 men and 16 children. The migrants come from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The people smugglers are said to have intended to take the group to the town of San Luis Potosi, about seven hours north of Amozoc, but they were left in the house for unknown reasons. Two men and a woman who were supervising the house have been arrested by the police.
Pushing to the border
Recently, the number of migrants trying to reach the US border through Mexico has risen sharply, putting pressure on US President Joe Biden. The large number of children who travel unaccompanied in particular causes problems. In February alone, more than 100,000 migrants were arrested at the southern border, including nearly 10,000 unaccompanied children. The Democrats themselves were previously very critical of Trump’s policies.
On Friday, US authorities reported that a nine-year-old Mexican child died trying to reach the US by crossing the Rio Grande River.
