Earlier today, the minister sent the nitrogen targets to the House of Representatives. These are particularly drastic for farmers. According to these targets, emissions in large parts of the country must be reduced by more than half. According to research institute TNO, farms cause 61 percent of all Dutch emissions.

It is not yet clear how the nitrogen targets should be achieved, but according to the cabinet it is inevitable that the farming sector will have to shrink considerably.

Protests expected
Action group Farmers Defense Force (FDF) already said it expected actions by farmers against the government’s nitrogen policy. Farmers’ collective Agractie has already said on Wednesday 22 June that it will campaign with tractors in The Hague against the cabinet’s approach to the nitrogen problem.
Farmers’ interest association LTO disapproves of the action. “I understand the anger, but they should not do this,” says chairman Sjaak van der Tak. “Farmers should not engage in any private action. This is not dignified and not appropriate.”

Many MPs find the protest at the minister’s house totally unacceptable. “Anger is no excuse. Threatening to whom it happens, undermining democracy,” said party leader Esther Ouwehand of the Party for the Animals. “Start the conversation, go to the Malieveld or demonstrate wherever you want. But leave our minister and her family alone at home!” D66 party chairman Jan Paternotte tweeted.
Caroline van der Plas of the BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) also disapproves of the protest at Van der Wal. “Stop that. You don’t visit people at home. No matter how angry you are,” she tweeted. According to her, the majority of farmers also do not support this type of action.
