A large group of catering entrepreneurs in Brabant will open their doors next weekend to protest against the corona measures. In Den Bosch, Rosmalen, Baarle-Nassau and Oisterwijk, among others, there is massive protest and restaurants and cafes open, often with the approval of the municipality.
Den Bosch and Rosmalen were among the first to participate. A protest action was already announced there on Thursday evening. In consultation with the municipality, the doors will open there on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We are disappointed and angry,” says the owner of restaurant De Zevende Hemel in Den Bosch Desiree Theuns. “We have been closed for a total of ten months. We have always respected the measures. What is needed is needed. But now many branches are allowed to open except the catering industry. Then the concept disappears for me.”
Desiree wants to make a statement: “We entered the lockdown together, then we will go out together.”
Most businesses in Tilburg remain closed
In Tilburg they think differently. Most of the catering businesses there will remain closed. “Until now, such actions have not yet led to the desired result,” explains Tim Wijdemans. He is chairman of the Tilburg department of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland.
“We also have a very good cooperation with the municipality and we don’t want to push that to a rush.” According to the chairman, restaurants and cafes in Tilburg that want to open next weekend can submit a demonstration request to the municipality. “The municipality is also sympathetic to this. It’s up to everyone to take advantage of that.”
So far, promotions have been announced from the following places:
- Baarle-Nassau – several catering businesses open Saturday and Sunday
- Bergen op Zoom – a few open their doors on Saturday
- Den Bosch – catering businesses open Saturday ten to five o’clock
- Dongen – seven catering businesses open on Saturday
- Heusden – a number of catering businesses are open on Saturday
- Land van Cuijk – catering businesses open
- Oisterwijk – catering businesses open until five o’clock
- Rosmalen – catering businesses open Saturday ten to five o’clock
- Tilburg – a few open their doors on Saturday
The local branches of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland in Breda and Roosendaal are still in consultation with the municipality about possible actions. There are no signs yet that action is being taken in Eindhoven.
