Greek emergency services have launched a search for a group of migrants shipwrecked off the coast of Crete. The sailboat with dozens of migrants on board was wrecked more than 100 kilometers off the coast of the island.
According to the Greek authorities, 36 people have been rescued so far. Some were taken from the ship, while others had to be rescued from the sea. Five migrants have been taken to the nearby island of Karpathos, others have been received aboard a cargo ship. According to the rescued migrants, there were at least 45 people on board the sunken ship.
A helicopter and two Coast Guard ships were deployed in the search for the drowning persons. Four merchant ships also help. The rescue operation is hampered by the high winds.
Many migrants try to enter the European Union via Greece. Since the corona pandemic, the number of migrants who make the crossing has fallen sharply. Strict border police regulations have also reduced the number of people.
