The trigger for this new day of protests is a shooting that occurred on Monday afternoon in Philadelphia when two officers responded to a call from an allegedly armed subject.
Upon arrival, they found 27-year-old Walter Wallace holding a knife.
The officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he did not do so and advanced towards them.
Officers shot him multiple times and Wallace did not survive his injuries.
The man’s father told the local press that his son was on medication and had mental health problems.
The National Guard was called to Philadelphia as protests, some peaceful and others leading to looting and damage to buildings, continued Tuesday night.
Protesters there marched to a district police headquarters, and later in the evening some of the protesters threw rocks, water bottles and other items at the responding policemen.
Along with the protest, further looting occurred as footage from helicopters showed looters targeting Footlocker, Walmart and other nearby stores in the Port Richmond neighborhood of the city.
Earlier in the evening, Governor Tom Wolf’s office confirmed that the Pennsylvania National Guard would be mobilizing to go to Philadelphia, where they would help protect local property and complement city police.
