Dozens of arrests in protest for Adil, one car in b …

A protest action took place in Anderlecht on Friday for Adil C., the 19-year-old boy who was killed on April 10 after a collision with a police car. The police attended en masse and arrested eighty to ninety demonstrators. One vehicle was set on fire.

About a hundred people gathered in front of the town hall of Anderlecht around 2 pm, wearing banners and T-shirts with ‘Justice pour Adil’.

The reason for the demonstration is the news on Thursday the public prosecutor’s office does not want to prosecute the agents who charge Adil C.. From the judicial investigation into the circumstances of the death, the public prosecutor has concluded that the two agents cannot be blamed. After an investigation, a traffic expert blames Adil C. himself for the accident. The public prosecutor’s office will ask the council chamber not to prosecute them.

The police were immediately present when the demonstration started. As soon as the group started to move, it was enclosed in the street next to the town hall by two water cannons and a dozen combis, although everything had been peaceful until then.

The police started arresting everyone one by one, which led to riots. Extreme left-wing youth had chained themselves together. Dozens of people walked at the edge of the column with smartphones filming the event. “We pay the police to help us, not beat us,” one of them said. Someone else yelled ‘Police assasin’. In the adjoining street some young people set off fireworks at the police, some also threw bottles. Later in the afternoon, a vehicle was set on fire in Rossini Street, but otherwise it remained quiet in the municipality, the police reported.

A group of 40 young people threw stones and incendiary bombs at Anderlecht town hall during a first action on Thursday evening. The nerves are tense in the environment.
