At least 40 people died and at least 300 were injured in today’s earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java, AFP said, citing local sources.
The quake was of magnitude 5.6.
The epicenter was located near Chianjur in West Java province. The focus of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. It was also felt in the capital, Jakarta.
“According to the information I have at the moment, in one hospital alone, nearly twenty people died and at least 300 received medical treatment. Most of the cases involved fractures sustained when people were trapped under the debris of destroyed buildings,” Herman Suherman, head of the municipal government of Chianjur, the city hardest hit by the previous 5.6-magnitude earthquake, he told Indonesian Metro TV.
