Dozens Killed in Illegal Fuel Tank Explosion in Benin

Dozens of people were killed on Saturday as a result of an illegal fuel tank explosion in Benin.

Agence France-Presse, citing an official toll, reported that at least 34 people were killed in the explosion that occurred in the city of Simi Karak, adjacent to the border with Nigeria.

A previous toll reported that 33 people were killed, in addition to 3 others being injured as a result of the explosion.

Video footage on social media showed flames consuming the warehouse and columns of smoke rising into the sky.

An official in the law enforcement authorities in Benin, the West African country, said that the explosion occurred in a fuel warehouse near the pineapple market in the city.

He added that the fire destroyed homes and vehicles near the warehouse.

The smuggled gasoline in Benin comes from its eastern neighbor, Nigeria, the main source of petroleum in Africa, and fuel prices there are lower compared to their prices in Benin.
