Floods in Malaysia have killed at least 46 people. Five people are also missing. The hope is that they will be found soon, local authorities tell The Straits Times.
Malaysia is being ravaged by the worst flooding in years. As a result, cities are under water and major roads are impassable. About 54,000 people have fled their homes.
The cause of the flooding is heavy rainfall last weekend. In the annual rainy season, the monsoon, there is always a lot of rain, but this time it is remarkably much, says the Ministry of Environment and Water from Malaysia. It happens once every hundred years that so much rainwater falls in such a short time.
Badly prepared
Due to the exceptional rainfall, the Malaysian army and police were called in to assist in the evacuation of people. The densely populated state of Selangor – where the capital Kuala Lumpur is located – was ill-prepared.
The government did not expect the area to be flooded, because normally not so much monsoon rain falls in that part of the peninsula. That area has been hit the hardest right now.
Efforts are underway to clear the debris in the streets.
