Dozens dead in landslides in Indonesia and East Timor

Landslides after heavy rainfall have killed dozens in eastern Indonesia and East Timor. 23 people died on the Indonesian island of Flores. Nine are injured and five people are missing. Many people have fled the violence of nature.

Many victims fell in the village of Lamanele, where mud fell from a hill and dozens of houses were buried. There were also victims in surrounding villages. A bridge collapsed on the island of Adonara.

Hundreds of people are involved in the rescue operations, but relief efforts are made more difficult because the power in the area has gone out and roads are impassable.

East Timor also affected

East Timor, which lies a little further to the east, has also been hit by the storm. There, eight deaths are reported in a landslide in a suburb of the capital Dili. The president’s palace has also been flooded.

The assistance there is mainly aimed at vulnerable people such as the elderly, children and pregnant women, says a manager.

The bad weather in the region is not over yet. A hurricane is approaching, bringing even more rain.
