Downpour in Pitigliano, a wall collapses, streets like torrents

(ANSA) – PITIGLIANO (GROSSETO), 18 AUG – Heavy rain in Pitigliano (Grosseto), in Maremma, where rainfall has flooded the town with water and mud. The rain has caused the Selciata wall to collapse in one place, which is the circular path around the cliff on which the town stands, a destination for tourists and day-trippers. There were no injuries, the narrow streets have become impassable, during the storm they turned into torrents. Civil protection reports over 25 millimeters of water fallen in 15 minutes. Pitigliano is also without electricity, probably due to flooding of the systems on land. Near the town, flooding has forced traffic to be interrupted on the 74 Maremmana state road. “We are working to restore a situation of normality – writes the Municipality -, we ask everyone to be extremely cautious and not to go out unless absolutely necessary”. The rain has infiltrated the roofs of the houses. The storm that hit Pitigliano (Grosseto) moved mud, water and debris downstream in such quantities that it interrupted traffic on the state road 74 ‘Maremmana’ around the town. The road was made impassable. Operations continue on site to secure the collapsed section of the Muro della Selciata and to make necessary repairs. The storm also hit the surrounding countryside hard. “The cumulative rainfall recorded in Pitigliano (Grosseto) reached about 80 mm,” said the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani. (ANSA).
