DOV: Sound bodies should hire more freelancers

Berlin (MH) – When playing again, the publicly financed orchestras and professional choirs should primarily use freelance musicians as orchestra and choir assistants. The orchestra could thus give these artists future prospects, said the managing director of the German Orchestra Association (DOV), Gerald Mertens, on Monday. “At the moment the business of the entire independent scene is still on the ground,” he emphasized.

The recommendation will initially apply until the end of the 2021/22 season. Then the DOV working group of freelancers and lecturers would review the effects and adjust them if necessary. Freelance musicians were among the professional groups with the greatest financial losses during the Corona crisis, Mertens explained. Many of them are existentially threatened. Young university graduates are also affected. While 15 percent would normally find a permanent position in the first year of employment, hardly any vacancies are currently being filled.

Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) suggested last Friday “that we oblige the institutions to also show a certain proportion of freelance artists or other groups. And to include them in their state-subsidized operations.” That could be included in the contracts with city and state theaters.
