When presenter Art Rooijakkers is given a tour of Douwe’s special houseboat, the singer-songwriter also shows the future baby room. It does require some imagination though. Really a lot of baby stuff is not in it yet, and that will remain so if it is up to the singer. Of course he’s going to buy the necessary items, but the 28-year-old thinks it’s nonsense to get the most expensive of the most expensive in the house… er in his houseboat. “I’m just not going to buy all kinds of expensive things for my child. I also think: you’ll grow out of it in a week or two,” he explains.
Although Douwe will soon be a father, he has no relationship with the mother of his upcoming child. “I’m having a child with a very nice, sweet woman. But I’m not in a relationship with her,” he says. Douwe thinks that it does not matter for the upbringing of the child and also says that he never intended to raise the child together. He continues: “It went the way it went. We had a great time a few times and she found out late too.”

It has not yet sunk in that he will become a father and according to Douwe it still feels ‘a bit unreal’. Quite honestly, he would have preferred ‘house, tree, animal’. He does, however, try to support the mother of his child as much as possible. “It’s also strange, because in a way it’s not as I imagined it either (…) I try to let it go a little bit and be there especially when she needs me. And when that little one I want to be a father to the child, but I don’t want to get in anyone’s way in any way,” said the singer.
With a non-obvious family construction, the opinions of the masses naturally soon lurk. Although Douwe doesn’t care much about that. He knows that it is not ‘as it should be’, but that does not detract from the love he feels for his unborn little one. For all those people who think something of him, he has a clear message: “Probably a lot of people will have an opinion about it, but big middle finger for you.”

As a child of divorced parents, Douwe also grew up in two worlds: partly with his mother, a safe haven. And also with his alcohol-addicted father, which was ‘very intense’ for Douwe. He tells about that period: “He was a very heavy guest, but super sweet and very loving on the one hand. And on the other hand also very difficult to live with. I am still very grateful to my mother, because I am That upbringing also made me who I am.” Although he has suffered some scratches and Douwe has been on antidepressants since he was fifteen and he has regular panic attacks. bring.”

At the end of last year his father died of Korsakov. The cause of Korsakov is a severe and prolonged deficiency of vitamin B1 due to severe alcohol dependence in combination with self-neglect and poor nutrition. The lack of vitamin B1 causes damage to certain parts of the brain. Douwe was there when he died: “I was holding him when he died. Then I cut and shaved him and combed his hair nicely (…) I thought that was a very nice thing actually, to give my father the last to render service.”
