The Head of Foreign Affairs of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, Rena Dourou, sent a message about the Cyprus issue while speaking at the EDEK conference.
As said by R. Dourou’s “debt for us, the progressive forces, is the continuation of the just struggle for the reunification of Cyprus. In the context of the relevant decisions of the UN Security Council, for the benefit of the entire Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots”.
“We join our voice with those who ask for peace with justice”
He then stated that “we join our voice with those who ask for “peace with justice” from the genocide of Gaza in Palestine to the Cyprus divided by the Turkish invasion and occupation”.
Rena Dourou underlined the need “for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, a solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, with political equality, with one citizenship, one sovereignty and one international personality, without guarantees and occupying troops. By returning the refugees to their properties, under safe conditions.
Continuing the legacy of the late Vasos Lyssaridis, as he defined it by writing the well-known: “until Cyprus is united, do not look for me among the absent” and reminding that “the struggles do not end with death, but with justice”. And this legacy of justification is difficult. But also inescapable. We all have to stand up and be worthy of her. And we will succeed!”

Thank you for joining us today. Section 1: Rena Dourou’s Message on the Cyprus Issue
Interviewer: Thank you for sharing your message on the Cyprus issue, Rena. Can you please elaborate on why you believe the continuation of the just struggle for the reunification of Cyprus is a priority for progressive forces?
Rena Dourou: As the Head of Foreign Affairs for SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, I firmly believe that the reunification of Cyprus is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic imperative for our party. The Cyprus issue has remained unresolved for far too long, causing immense suffering to the people of Cyprus and creating instability in the region. It is our responsibility to continue advocating for a fair and sustainable solution that respects the rights of all citizens, regardless of their ethnic background. Our goal is to achieve a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, one citizenship, one sovereignty, and one international personality, without guarantees and occupying troops. This is the only way forward for Cyprus to truly thrive and prosper.
Interviewer: Maria, as an expert in international relations, what is your take on Rena’s statement on the need for justice in the Cyprus issue? Do you think that a focus on justice is the most effective approach?
Maria Petrides: I agree with Rena’s assertion that justice is crucial in resolving the Cyprus problem. However, I believe that justice must be balanced with pragmatism and realism. While it is important to pursue a solution that upholds the rights of all Cypriots, we must also recognize the complexities of the situation and the challenges posed by Turkey’s involvement. A fair and sustainable solution will require compromise from all parties involved, and an overly simplistic approach that prioritizes justice over
