Later, he bought shares in a software company using money from a mortgage on land he inherited from his family, and the company, identified as Great Plains Software, was acquired in 2001 by Microsoft for about $1.1 billion dollars.
But money is not all that defines Burgum, but his rather conservative political views.
According to The New York Times, this year alone, Burgum has signed eight laws aimed at restricting medical services for the transgender population, and approved, in April, one of the most severe anti-abortion laws in the United States.
