Doug Burgum: North Dakota Governor with White House Aspirations and Unorthodox Campaign Techniques

In the state of North Dakota, the name of Doug Burgum is not unknown, for obvious reasons: he is the governor of the state. But in the rest of the country, Burgum is rather unknown.. In fact, a June poll conducted by Quinnipiac University and reviewed by the USA Today portal indicated that at least 90% of Americans had never heard of this governor before. However, this does not diminish his aspirations to reach the White House in 2024.

In fact, his desire to reach the US presidency is so great that he has even used unorthodox campaign techniquessuch as offering gift cards (gift cards) of $20 dollars to each person who donates $1 dollar to his campaign, which was designated as “buying his followers”, according to the USA Today portal.

However, if something has characterized Burgum’s political career, it is that he has started from scratch and has achieved several of his goals.

In fact, when he proposed to reach the governorship of North Dakota in January 2016, few people knew him, according to The New York Times. He trailed well behind other candidates like the Republican’s pick for governor, Wayne Stenehjem, whom he beat by more than 20 points in the Republican primary.

Before that, Burgum had not been elected to any public officeand, according to The New York Times, he benefited from an “anti-establishment” campaign message and an “outsider” of the American political scene.

But that is not all: Burgum is a billionaire businessman.

The New York Times reported that he was raised in Arthur, a small town in North Dakota, and that he earned a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University. Later, he bought shares in a software company using money from a mortgage on land he inherited from his family, and the company, identified as Great Plains Software, was acquired in 2001 by Microsoft for about $1.1 billion dollars.

But money is not all that defines Burgum, but his rather conservative political views.

According to The New York Times, this year alone, Burgum has signed eight laws aimed at restricting medical services for the transgender population, and approved, in April, one of the most severe anti-abortion laws in the United States.
