Doubts cleared: gas is flowing again through the pipeline between Russia and Germany

Russian President Vladimir Putin assured on Tuesday evening that Russian state gas company Gazprom would fully honor its obligations to its customers. But he also said that the restart of Nord Stream 1 does not depend entirely on Russia. A gas turbine from the German company Siemens plays a crucial role in this.

The gas turbine would be essential to keep the pipeline running at full power, but was under repair in Canada for a long time. Officially, the faulty turbine is also the reason why Russia already cut gas supplies to Germany by 60 percent last month.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the turbine is now on its way to Russia and can therefore not be used as an excuse not to fully restart gas supplies. “By the way, there are other solutions. It’s not the only turbine in the world that fits, there are still identical turbines available.”
