Doubling N34 is delayed by a year

The partial doubling of the N34, also known as the Hunebed Highway, is delayed by a year. Additional research is needed.

There should actually be a design by the end of this year. That won’t be until the end of next year at the earliest. It is not yet clear enough what widening the N34 means for archaeology, geological values, cultural history and the landscape in the area.

The province wants to increase traffic safety on the N34, improve traffic flow and improve the connection for public transport. The province wants to do this by partially doubling the road between Emmen and De Punt, from a two-lane road to a four-lane road.

In addition, the province wants to build a new traffic circle – a large roundabout – near Gieten. There the N34 intersects with the N33. The design for the new traffic circle is also delayed due to the extra research and will not be completed until the end of 2023.
