Double vaccination against flu and Covid reduces respiratory diseases

The teachers of the Brooks College of Health of the University of North Florida (United States) have published a study demonstrating that the double vaccination against COVID-19 and the seasonal flu it is associated with reduced infection rates and may be an effective strategy to reduce the burden of contagious respiratory disease during winter.

The study, published in ‘Vaccine’ found that individuals doubly vaccinated and only vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccine were significantly less likely to report a Covid-19 infection than the unvaccinated. There were no significant differences in the severity of self-reported COVID-19 symptoms according to vaccination status.

The doctor Zhigan Xiassistant professor of public health, and Dr. Hanadi Hamadi, an associate professor of health care administration, collaborated on the study with two University of Florida researchers. Using data from the 2021 National Health Survey, the team conducted descriptive analyzes and multivariate logistic regressions to examine the association between dual vaccination status and self-reported Covid-19 infection and severity among 21,387 (weighted 185,251,310 ) American adults.

Of the respondents, approximately 22% received neither the flu shot nor the Covid-19 vaccine, 6% received the flu shot only, 29.1% received the Covid-19 vaccine only, and 42.5% received both vaccines.
