Double Norwegian at the top in the World Cup final – Jens Burman surprised with the first podium place of his career | Sports

Simen Hegstad Krüger finished the World Cup as a winner. He beat compatriot Hans Christer Holund and Jens Burman in a sprint deal in the last race. Iivo Niskanen did not have a good day today, often losing his footing on the muddy pitch.

The men’s last race in the World Cup was intended to go as a hunt start over 50 kilometers, but the race became in practice a mass start.

The many downhill runs meant that the field gathered very quickly. Not even Aleksander Bolshunov, who had a lead of 18 seconds at the start, made any attempt at a solo race, and after 15 kilometers the group consisted of almost 60 skiers.

Alexei Chervotkin added color to the race when he made a jerk with 20 miles left to go and at most he had a gap of over 30 seconds.

At the same time as Chervotkin increased the pace, Bolshunov lay and slowed down the cluster, and only when he released other riders in the lead did the speed increase in the cluster as well.

Chervotkin’s management did not hold

Chervotkin rode for just over 15 kilometers with a lead of between ten and twenty seconds, but was caught when the last steep climb began five kilometers before the finish.

At the end of the hill, Hans Christer Holund made a change of pace and got Jens Burman and Simen Hegstad Krüger with him, while both Bolshunov and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo dropped a few meters and fell out of the victory battle.

Krüger was then first in the short finish line and won the race before Holund and Burman. For the Swede, this was the first podium place of his career.

Iivo Niskanen had no good position in the last hill and had no chance to follow when it was all decided. He finished in 22nd place – two pinholes ahead of Perttu Hyvärinen.
