Görlitz has clarity for the next two years. The city council gave the green light for the new double budget with a narrow majority in the evening. Not an easy task, because the city has to save. There is a million deficit in the draft budget.
In order to be able to compensate for the minus of around 8 million euros, Görlitz has to tighten its belt and generate short-term income. Among other things, the budget charter provides for the parental contributions to be increased, the trade tax not to be reduced as planned and the parental contributions to be increased.
Nevertheless, the city also wants to invest. To this end, the investment package that had already been decided in 2019 was completely turned on its head – according to Mayor Octavian Ursu. For example, the primary school in Königshufen is to be refurbished or urban development plans are to be pursued. In order to remain able to act, the city is taking out additional loans of around 4.2 million euros.
In addition, Görlitz is sticking to the plans for the renovation of the town hall. A corresponding motion by the Motor Görlitz / Bündnisgrüne parliamentary group to terminate the project immediately did not find the required majority. According to current estimates, the project will cost around 43 million euros. After an examination by the tax authorities, a decision is expected to be made in late summer.
