One of the two meter-high rubber bath ducks in Hong Kong harbor has deflated. The hot weather and rising air pressure had stretched the duck’s rubber. Repair takes too much time and so the other rubber duck swims solo again.
Rubber duck, the well-known installation by the Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, went all over the world. The art project returned to Hong Kong as double duck, so two ducks. Now that one of the ducks has deflated, visitors are disappointed. They had hoped to see two 60-foot-tall rubber band ducks.
Double duck was unveiled Friday and would float in port for two weeks. But during a check, staff found that the rubber on one of the ducks had stretched too far due to the hot weather and rising air pressure. It would take too long for a repair ship to arrive, so it was decided to deflate the duck.
Rubber duck on world tour
In 2007 the world tour of rubber duck. The giant rubber duck floated from French to Brazilian waters. In 2013, the rubber duck was previously seen in Hong Kong. Then the duck was already deflated, but after a few days it was repaired again.
Hofman was asked if he could let the rubber duck swim in Hong Kong harbor again, but he had doubts. He wants the duck to focus on local conflicts. The cheerful presence of the duck should lighten them up a bit. Hofman therefore wanted to create something that Hong Kong needs after the corona pandemic.
And that’s two ducks. Hofman said in statement: “Double duck is twice as lucky. The work symbolizes friendship and commitment. Double duck is not about the past, but about enjoying the moment together.”
